Zodiac compatibility charts — the ones that say "Aries pairs well with Leo" — are some of the most shared astrology content online. They're based on a simplified system that groups the twelve signs by element and modality.
The four elements
- Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) — energetic, direct, spontaneous
- Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) — practical, steady, security-focused
- Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) — social, idea-driven, communicative
- Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) — emotional, intuitive, sensitive to mood
Traditional compatibility logic pairs signs of the same element (shared instincts) or complementary elements (fire/air and earth/water tend to reinforce each other), while opposite-element pairings are said to require more conscious effort.
The three modalities
Each sign also carries a modality — cardinal (initiators), fixed (sustainers), or mutable (adapters) — which is said to describe how a sign approaches change, separate from its emotional style.
Why sun-sign-only compatibility is incomplete
A full compatibility reading ("synastry") compares two complete birth charts — sun, moon, rising, and more — not just the sun sign each person was born under. Sun-sign charts are a fun shorthand, but they leave out the moon sign (emotional compatibility) and rising sign (first-impression dynamics) that a fuller reading would include.
