A natal chart (also called a birth chart) is a map of where the sun, moon, and planets were positioned in the sky at the exact date, time, and location of your birth. Astrologers use it as the foundation for any personalized reading, because it captures far more detail than a sun sign alone.
The three ingredients you need
- Birth date — determines your sun sign and the general planetary positions
- Birth time — needed to calculate your moon sign precisely and your rising sign (ascendant)
- Birth location — needed to place the chart's houses correctly
The "big three"
Most beginner-friendly readings focus on three placements:
- Sun sign — core identity and how you express yourself
- Moon sign — emotional patterns and what makes you feel secure
- Rising sign — first impressions and how others tend to perceive you
Houses and planets
Beyond the big three, a full chart divides the sky into twelve "houses," each associated with a life area (career, relationships, home, and so on), and places each planet within a house and sign. Interpreting the full chart takes practice, which is why most people start with a simplified Sun and Moon reading before going deeper.
